Park View Yard — Reggae / Dub / Dancehall mix

A bit of a departure from the Sol Power sound, but I have been a reggae head for a long long time. And my reggae crates are probably deeper than those of any other genre. Over the years, I’ve accumulated a nice collection of 70s and early 80s roots, early dancehall, and dub LPs, a whole bunch of 12” roots singles (most of which have DJ versions and / or extended dubs), and crates full of 45s. I go through phases where I concentrate on other genres, but I always seem to come back to reggae for a few reasons (in no particular order):

1) The vocalists — For such a small island, there are SOOOO many truly gifted Jamaican vocalists — Dennis Brown, Freddie McGregor, Johnny Osbourne, Jacob Miller, Marcia Griffiths, Gregory Isaacs…the list goes on. Each and every one of the above could hang with the best Motown / Stax artists, imo.

2) The recording / engineering. For whatever reason, the recording / production techniques and engineering in Jamaica was light years ahead of the rest of the world. Early reggae producers / engineers like Lee Perry and King Tubby really wanted to differentiate their sound from the American R&B that was also popular on the island at the time and make sure their joints sounded louder and bass-ier than everyone else’s inna di yard. So they got really creative behind the boards. In the late 70s / early 80s, Prince Jammy, Scientist, and Junjo Lawes just took it one step beyond. Besides the weirdness / echo / delay, everything just SOUNDS so good and dynamic.

3) A lot of reggae is just damn funny. Name another genre with hits about the skeletal system, bicycle tricks, or getting married (and later divorced)?

So anyhow, here is my mix — all vinyl, all roots rock reggae, dub and dancehall.
