Sunny Grooves
A beautiful day deserves beautiful West African sounds (with an apt title to boot). Check out this brand spakin new mix of some not so spankin new West African records, compiled by the one and only Voodoo Funk aka Frank Gossner. He’s been digging for and reissuing lost West African heat for years now, and this latest mix reveals some of his recently found treasures. His blog is a goldmine...

Jeremy Sole
A number of years ago Meistro and I had Jeremy Sole as a guest at our monthly jaunt at Wonderland Ballroom, Dirty Bombs. He was already well respected at the time, but the last few years he’s really been blowing up. On top of being a great DJ, Jeremy is a real master of producing deep, soulful dance music across many genres- hip hop, house, cumbia, motown, the list goes on. So rather than...

Mr. Fish "My African Caravan Mix"
Just came across this great mix from Mr. Fish, who hails from Melbourne, Australia. He released this one half a year ago or so, when it was winter on his side of the globe and I have to say that it’s sounding really nice on this chilly winter morning while I ease into the work week. Starts off very chill with some African dancehall and balkan beats and builds into some afro house for the...

We got some nice e-props over at thevinyldistrict.com….
Oral history isn’t just a reflection of social movement, it’s a science. And that set the tone for an evening highlighted by the many rhythms of Cheick Hamala Diabate. Last Friday night, at the Rock and Roll Hotel, we got a dose of traditional West African music with a funk chaser.

African Selector Vol. 1
Just in time for this Friday’s show with Cheick Hamala and the Empresarios, I came across this new comp on Atal Music. African Selector Vol. 1 is a top notch collection of new tunes running the gamut from traditional highlife-style to coupe-decale. I’m looking forward to dropping a couple of these jams at Rock and Roll Hotel this Friday. You can scoop it at Juno and Traxsource.

Bersas Discos #7
Bersas Discos have been making noise for a few years now. The record label essentially popularized the new cumbia sound that’s getting play all across the country in all types of clubs. The Bersas Discos sound has also been a primary influence on moombahton, which has now eclipsed cumbia in popularity in the States. But that’s all subtext to the point at hand… the awesome new...

Brand New Wayo
There’s a great new comp out on Comb & Razor call Brand New Wayo full of that afrobeat, disco, and funk we love at Sol Power. Tunes are all from 1979-1983 and encapsulate so much of what was great about Nigerian funk at the time- strong influences from American artists, combined with African musical traditions. Check the clips below! You can pick it up at Juno.

Nigerian funk rock BOMBS
Soundway Records just unleashed a one-two-three combination reissue bomb onto the masses. First up is MonoMono’s debut LP, Give the Beggar a Chance from 1972. The title track is the lead track on this here mix and, in my opinion, is the strongest of the set. I scored a copy in Nigeria, and out of about 50 LPs I brought home, it probably gets the most play. A lot of Nigerian LPs have a lot...

Empresarios & Kid Gusto
This post is dedicated to two killer new releases from DC-bred musical powerhouses, the Empresarios and Kid Gusto. The Empresarios have been releasing some memorable latin jams for a few years now, but their latest EP, Bestia, is probably their best effort yet. Packed with heat including two latin house bombs and a cumbia cut aimed straight at the dancefloor, this could be the one that really puts...

The Best of Quantic / J-Rocc mix
What if I released an instant classic soulful / jazzy dance LP when I was just old enough to drink? And then I followed it up with another the very next year? And then I got a little bored, so the year after that I started a full funk / soul ensemble and unleashed another instant classic? And then I realized I could do it all at once, and got back to producing and remixing. I’m gonna...

Yosaku and Braza SF
I would say better late than never on this mix that Yosaku dropped in March but there’s no expiration date on dopeness. I knew Yosaku first as a great broken beat producer with a taste for updating classic Brazilian records, but he’s also pretty flawless on the decks. Check out this live set from BRAZA! in San Fran.

Fela Soul
This won’t knock the earth off it’s axis, but it’s pretty fresh — 8 De La Soul songs over beats constructed with Fela Kuti samples. This trend of mashing up artists is getting a little tired, but this is worth a few listens.
